Designed for a mature couple in Walnut Creek, CA, this residential project transforms a traditional structure into an accessible, light-filled aging-in-place sanctuary. Executed during my time as an Interior Designer with JD Designs, the primary architectural objective was to integrate seamless universal accessibility without sacrificing a sophisticated, high-end aesthetic. My role on the project encompassed the spatial layout, which focused on intuitive ergonomics, prioritizing wide circulation paths, flush transitions between rooms, and strategic furniture arrangements that promote independence and effortless daily movement.
The interior architecture centers on warmth, simplicity, and tactile safety. We specified a refined palette of natural wood tones, organic neutral colors, and high-durability, slip-resistant materials that offer comfort underfoot. A comprehensive residential lighting design scheme was engineered to enhance visibility and eradicate shadows, maintaining a soft, serene atmosphere that adapts to changing natural light patterns from morning to evening.
The soul of the cottage is best captured in a quiet, daily ritual: morning light filtering through sheer window treatments, illuminating the warm wood surfaces as the couple enjoys a slow breakfast. By intentionally balancing rigorous universal design principles with emotional warmth, the result is a deeply personal East Bay residential remodel that proves safety and luxury can coexist beautifully—allowing its inhabitants to live with dignity, comfort, and pride.
